What are you doing January 1 or 2, 2017? January is the #1 month to begin a diet and most New Year resolutions involve weight- loss and getting in better shape.
There’s a phrase you will hear and see on TV programs, commercials, newspapers, magazines: “New Year, New You.” Weight Watcher’s, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and 100’s of new diet books will bid you to “join them” in the “New Year, New You” hub bub.
I’m sure most readers have themselves tried or have family, friends, or coworkers who have “done” Weight Watcher’s, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem, or fad diets. And I can assure you that less than 40% lost the weight they wanted to lose and at the end of one year, only 5% maintained weight loss. Why all the failure?
The biggest reason for being unsuccessful on any weight loss program is because 60% of overweight/obese adults cannot lose weight and keep it off by cutting calories. 60% of adults don’t have a problem with calories, they have a problem with a genetically programmed over-production of the fat gain hormone; insulin. In other words, they have a hormone imbalance in their endocrine system that gets turned- on by life stressors such as: emotional stress, pain, physical stress like disease and health complications, lack of physical activity, hormonal markers like menarche and menopause, pregnancy, lactation.
Once excess insulin is produced, the person develops insulin resistance and gets fatter on the body (around the middle, back fat, love handles), in the blood (high cholesterol or triglycerides) and in the liver (NAFLD).
Counting calories or undereating does not solve insulin imbalance. You can cut calories, go low fat, eat less than you burn in exercise, etc…..but most people will never lose weight and keep it off on a calorie based program.
There is only one lifestyle program that was developed over 15 years ago by a nutritionist, registered dietitian, and diabetes educator who was suffering with insulin imbalance, insulin resistance, overweight, PCOS, gestational diabetes, pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high LDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides. She had all these medical continues before the age of 40 following a calorie based diet. She was a registered dietitian, remember?
I’m sure that if you met 10 registered dietitians over the age of 35, at least 6 of them are overweight or obese!! These are nutrition specialists. How can they be overweight and chronically ill? They are following low calorie, decreased fat diets and under-exercising. I promise you that.

PS: When OPRAH returns with her “amazing weight loss results”….(She hasn’t told us how much “SHE LOVES BREAD” in over a year)….my money’s on a gastric bypass.
She is a major stock holder in Weight Watchers and in October of last year she got on the Weight Watchers bandwagon, bought the stock, and told us she loves bread. Then…NADA. It takes about a year to lose 125-150 pounds after weight loss surgery. I’m predicting we’ll be seeing more of her on TV promoting Weight Watchers, and less of her on the screen!
