7 Questions for Diane Kress about The Metabolism Miracle; born of necessity and now making a huge impact on weight and inch loss, and renewal of health, energy, focus, and that glow!

  • What drove you to research, design, and write “The Metabolism Miracle”?
  • I had been a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator for over 35 years.  As a data collector, an analytical and methodical person, as well as very conscientious at my job….I had discovered several things as the years passed and I specialized in weight loss, metabolism, and diabetes.

    Despite concerted effort, about 60% of people who followed the traditional low calorie/ low fat diet for weight loss did not have long term success.  In fact, most lost only 8 pounds after 8 weeks only to regain that small amount of weight.  As if this were not enough, I noticed that these same people had progressively increasing waist measurement, were acquiring back fat,  had increased cholesterol (LDL) and low HDL, increased triglycerides and blood pressure…and slowly but surely their blood sugar was increasing!  These “dieters” were actually getting fatter and sicker on a low calorie, low fat program!  And I was one of these people.

    Aside from the poor weight loss and decreasing health, they had a list of personal symptoms that were common to most:

    Fatigue (even in the morning upon waking up), weight gain around the middle, their old “tried and true” diets no longer worked, they “loved” carbohydrate foods and seemed to crave them at times, irritability, anxiety, mild depression/melancholy, restless sleep, inability to focus and concentrate, poor short term memory, racing thoughts, sensitivity to light, etc.

    The other 40% of my patients did succeed on traditional calorie counting programs in terms of weight loss and they did not see worsening health, the aforementioned symptoms, or increased need for medications

    In time, I was able to assess fasting lab work, a patient’s personal and family medical history, and personal symptoms and conclude if they would succeed on a traditional diet or not.  I coined a name for these dieters.  Those who WOULD succeed on traditional diets had Metabolism A.  Those who would not succeed with conventional low calorie diet had Metabolism B.  For ease; Met A or Met B.

    I spent years refining a diet protocol that would work for the majority of overweight people.  It turns out that their root problem is not eating too many calories and not exercising enough. The root of their problem is the hormonal imbalance of the fat gain hormone; INSULIN.  Those with Met B have insulin imbalance.  Excess insulin causes excess fat gain on and in the body, high cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and eventually can lead to diabetes.

    I took apart the traditional diet and mathematically put it back together to match the metabolism of a person with insulin issues.  It required years of pain staking work, but ultimately…the program was perfected.

    The Metabolism Miracle became a 3 Step program:

    Step 1 to rest and rehab insulin production.

    Step 2 to reintroduce carbohydrate based on amount, glycemic index, glycemic load, and carbohydrate timing.  No other diet protocol put all three necessary components together.

    Step 3, or maintenance, was a lifestyle rather than a diet and enabled these people to live at their desired weight on little to no medication and feeling great.

    After successful outcomes with over 3000 patients, and the data to prove it, I decided to write The Metabolism Miracle that would teach the world about Metabolism B, how to live in accordance with it, and would provide a very easy to follow core program, sample menus, and recipes.

    I’ve now personally taught the program to over 6000 patients and the program is a New York Times Bestseller, licensed in 7 languages, and successfully followed around the world.

    2. It is called “The Metabolism Miracle“, why did you decide to call the program a “miracle?”

    In its development and when I initially taught it at my private practice, the program didn’t have a name…I offered it as a diet program to those patients who matched the protocol for Met B.  In short order,  physicians specifically sent their patients to me to learn that “really effective program.”  When I got a publisher, they wanted to know what I intended to call the program.  I asked my patients what one world they would use to describe it and many used the word “miracle.”  And so, the Metabolism Miracle was born.

    3. Your book discusses a unique 3 Step carb-focused program that stabilizes blood glucose levels and reprograms the metabolism to burn fat instead of build fat, can you describe how this is done?

    The Metabolism Miracle is a 3 Step program .  Those with uncontrolled Metabolism B begin the program with their pancreas producing excess fat gain hormone; insulin, their liver releasing excess sugar (glycogen) and resultant excess sugar storage in fat cells.

    When the pancreas releases excess insulin, blood sugar drops.  This drop in blood sugar causes a person to feel very hungry for carbohydrate foods (chips, cookies, chocolate, bread, fried, etc).  When they relent and eat the carbohydrate food, their blood sugar spikes high. The pancreas over- reacts to the rise in sugar with more excess insulin that drops the sugar low again. This causes hunger, fatigue, binge eating, depression, anxiety, and overweight!  It’s a tiring and uncomfortable way to live. It’s like living life on a roller coaster of low and high blood sugar.

    If the person says…”I’m not going to “cave in” and eat. I’ve used up all my calories for the day so I’ll ignore the hunger”  it would seem like a solution to stopping the roller coaster, right?

    Unfortunately: wrong.

    Whenever a person doesn’t eat for a period of time exceeding 5 hours, their liver will automatically release stored sugar (glycogen) to fuel the brain and organs. (This is a built in survival mechanism)  When blood sugar rises from the liver release, the Met B  pancreas over-releases insulin AGAIN.

    You can conclude that the person with Met B is seemingly doomed as they release excess insulin and get fatter when they eat AND when they don’t eat.

    Step 1 of The Metabolism Miracle is designed to be lower in carbohydrate so the dieter can control the amount of carb that can converts to blood sugar and also is enough to cause the liver to deplete its stores of glycogen.  After Day 4 of the program, as the dieter stays within carb guidelines and has depleted its stored glycogen…the body shifts from a fat building machine to a fat burning machine!

    Step 2: After 8 weeks of rest and rehab in Step 1, a person can move to Step 2.  Carbohydrate foods increase in quantity, are all lower glycemic index and are timed to work with the body’s natural clock. The dieter chooses a carbohydrate serving at breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime and between meals that will exceed 5 hours.  All healthy, low glycemic, delicious carbs are added to a base of lean protein, heart healthy fat, and neutral veggies.  Step 2 is also a fat burning step.

    Step 3: Once a dieter reaches his/her desired weight, loves his body, feels great, has improved lab  work and takes as little medication as possible, he moves to Maintenance.  This is an individual carbohydrate allotment based on gender, height, desired weight, age, activity.  It is more of a way of life than a diet.

    All Steps require a minimum of 30 minutes activity over and above the dieter’s norm, water/decaf fluid, recommended vitamins/supplements like Omega 3’s.

    4. What are the worst trends you currently see in the average American diet that cause obesity or diabetes?

    Without a doubt, the #1 worst trend is the premise that obesity, overweight, and diabetes are caused by excess calories.  For the majority of the overweight population, their weight and health doesn’t suffer from the number of calories, but the type of foods they are consuming.   Super-Sized amounts of carbohydrate: soda, energy drinks, fries, bagels, pasta portions, candy, desserts, sub rolls, wraps, pizza, take out Chinese, take out burritos with rice and beans, chips, soft pretzels, etc etc.  Years ago, when the medical community zeroed in on “low fat, low cholesterol, low calories, we became a high carb society.  We are so focused on fat free/low fat and these foods are actually higher in carbohydrate content.  And high carbohydrate foods are toxic for those with Met B.   Ex: Olive oil and vinegar dressing may have more fat and calories than fat free Italian dressing…but it has no carbohydrate grams and won’t cause over release of insulin.

    Also, we have become a nation of inactivity…spending most of our time sitting.  A sitting body does not burn off blood sugar efficiently and causes higher circulating insulin levels.

    In addition, the average person in the 21st century is highly stressed. Stress causes the release of stress hormones that cause blood sugar to rise and excess insulin to release.

    Lastly, the feed we give our cattle, pigs, poultry contains growth hormone, antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals that is transferred to us when we consume the meat.  Back in the day, our protein sources were clean….no hormones, antibiotics, pesticides….and we were healthier.

    5. From a number of weight loss books in the market, what makes “The Metabolism Miracle” different and effective?

    The Metabolism Miracle is the only book written to cover all aspects of Metabolism B.  Close to 60% of the population and everyone with metabolic syndrome, pre diabetes, and type 2 diabetes has Metabolism B.  As a result, it is THE #1 program that works, in the short AND long term.  Not a gimmick, not a fad…it is 100% based in real science.

    6. Could you share with us on average how much weight does your clients usually lose while following this diet? And what is the ONE thing that helps them to lose weight with “The Metabolism Miracle”?

    Fat loss is dependent on 3 factors: Gender, height, and a person’s starting weight at the beginning of every 8 week interval.  There is a chart in the book that tells each person how much fat he/she can expect to lose every 8 weeks.  Oddly, on The Metabolism Miracle the number of inches lost equals the number of pounds lost.  Usually, a 15# loss on a calorie counting diet is a 7-8 inch loss.  On Metabolism Miracle, 100% fat loss enables a 15 inch loss for a 15 pound loss!

    7. As there are readers who are struggling to lose weight, shed inches of fat, and maintain muscle, do you have anything specific you want to say for them?

    If you are no longer losing weight on your old tried and true diets, if weight gain has shifted to your middle with muffin top, back fat, love handles

      I am wondering why the 8 weeks on step 1. In reading your book, I noticed you reset by doing 10 days at step 1. Other than increased weight loss, would going on step 1 for 10 days and then moving to step 2 be okay?

      You have to begin The Metabolism Miracle with an 8 week rest and rehab of the pancreas/liver to start the program (Step 2) with everything at ground zero. A “reset” of 10 days is used for someone who goes “off program” for a short time like a vacation, an illness, Thanksgiving, etc.

      I guess my confusion is that you said after four days the liver was depleted of glycogen and so why so many weeks to rest. The reason I ask is that I have been on step one for 12 days now and I have noticed an increase in my heart rate when I exercise now that is disturbing. My stomach hurts at times and I just don’t generally feel as good as I want. I know you said not to weigh for a month, but I have lost 5 pounds already, which is the prediction for the end of the 8 weeks for me. I feel like step 2 would still help me loose weight and would be almost decadent in allowing me some to increase carbs and eat more normally.
