THE REALITY OF FAST FOOD ADDICTION…IT’S ALL ABOUT THE “CARBAGE”.

There IS an addictive ingredient hiding in plain sight in fast food. The fast food industry needs to take responsibility for overweight, obesity, diabetes and much more.

The #1 problem is NOT the fat or “sugar” in fast foods…although this is what we are told. The #1 problem with fast food IS its extraordinarily high CARBOHYDRATE content.

CARBOHYDRATE ADDICTION is not your fault!

Over 60% of the adult population is primed for addiction to carbs because their metabolism OVER PROCESSES carbs into excess fat on their body (belly fat, love handles, back fat) and in their blood (cholesterol and triglycerides). Most are totally unaware that they were born with the genes to become over-fat producers.

When people with insulin imbalance consume carbs…they OVER-RELEASE the fat gain hormone; insulin. Insulin acts as a key to open fat cells to receive excess glucose in the blood. Carbohydrate is the only nutrient that breaks 100% into blood glucose. If a person with over-insulin release eats a high carb containing meal or snack, their blood glucose rises and their insulin over-releases. They become FAT from the high CARBOHYDRATE of fast food meals.

The worst part about fast foods?…the typical meal is SUPER HIGH in carbohydrate. 60% of adults will become FAT/OBESE from excess FAT GAIN HORMONE released as their blood sugar rises from carbs. I call their metabolism; METABOLISM B or MET B.

SUGAR IS ONLY ONE EXAMPLE OF CARBOHYDRATE….IT IS ONLY ONE PART OF A FAST FOOD MEAL THAT TURNS DIRECTLY INTO BLOOD GLUCOSE.

While it’s true that sugar is an example of carbohydrate, you will be amazed at all the other excess sources of carb contained in fast food. I call excess and unnecessary carb grams; CARBAGE. CARBAGE is “Garbage” carbohydrate that provides negligible nutrition but is triggering Metabolism B in millions of consumers.

All the while, the fast food industry and the US government claims the major problem with fast food is SUGAR….and ignore that sugar is just one source of carbohydrate….the REAL PROBLEM.

MAJOR CARBAGE IN A FAST FOOD MEAL

High carbohydrate foods cause blood glucose to quickly spike. A person with Metabolism B will over-release insulin ( fat gain hormone) jamming excess blood glucose into fat cells.

Fast Food burger and fries
This major transfer of glucose from the bloodstream into fat cells results in lower than normal glucose in the blood. In an effort to raise blood glucose back into the normal range, the brain signals the person with Met B to “eat more carbs.” When he grabs another handful of fries, sips more soda, grabs a few more nuggets, even more insulin is released. Fat cells get fatter as blood glucose drops again . Cravings stir, more carbs are consumed, and the person literally becomes “fatter and fatter” and feels drained, cranky, tired. Many Met B’s call this feeling a “carb coma.”

Carb craving and consumption is a vicious cycle that addicts those with Metabolism B to carbohydrate. Ironically, the very foods that are making them fatter and sicker are the foods they “CRAVE” It’s not emotional or psychological addiction…it is a true physical addiction. When Met B’s say they feel like carb addicts, they are right.

WHAT IS THE CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT OF FOODS ON THE MENU AT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS?

For a frame of reference, consider a healthy maximum carbohydrate intake/meal for a woman as 45 grams. A maximum carb intake/meal for a man is about 60 grams.

An adult meal of a Big Mac, Large Fries, and Large Soda = 272 grams of carb!

Check out the carb content of the following “fast foods” and prepare to have sticker shock from the hidden carb grams that fuel overweight, over fat, fatigue, depression, ADD/ADHD, type 2 diabetes, PCOS, breast, pancreatic, ovarian cancers for the millions with uncontrolled insulin.

CARBOHYDRATE CAUSES ADDICTION IN 60% OF ADULTS

It is not physically possible to be addicted to fat or sodium. It is absolutely possible for those with Met B to become addicted to high carbohydrate food choices.

I’d love to see fast food joints and restaurants offer Met B friendly choices….AND list their net carb grams along with calories. Less than 40% of overweight people have a calorie- based weight problem but MORE than 60% of people struggling with weight loss and “carb addiction” have a carbohydrate problem. We need to make carbohydrate comparisons. Yesterday.

Fast food companies are welcome to contact me through my office to consult regarding realistic, delicious, consumer -friendly changes to their menus to REALLY help fight obesity and diabetes. It’s time to have accountability regarding the foods being served and it would be a tremendous marketing strategy to show that you DO care about the future health of our children.

It’s true that if you swap out the large regular soda for water, you will cut 90 carb grams at that meal. 90 carb grams are the equivalent of 18 tsp of sugar or 6 servings of carbohydrate (like 6 slices of bread!).

I am willing to bet that families are very aware that fast food selections like burgers, fries, nuggets, onion rings, and soda are “junk food. ” Many go through the drive though at a fast food joint when they are in a pinch or want a quick meal out. I don’t think anyone is fooled into thinking that these are “Happy Meals” but they are quick, convenient, and “on the way.”

I don’t think they realize that the carb content of fast food is astronomical…and that chances are they, and their children, are suffering from carb addiction and are setting themselves up for medical maladies like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, PCOS, cancers, GERD, osteoporosis, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease.

Those who follow my work know that excess carbohydrate causes a physiological addiction for millions of people with insulin imbalance. There are over 110 million Americans with the genetic predisposition to a syndrome known as “Metabolism B” (aka metabolic syndrome).

If you are interested in learning about a lifestyle the initially detoxes carb addiction by reducing insulin release and then methodically re-introduces healthy carb grams on a “clean slate”. The Metabolism Miracle, NY Times Bestseller, has a revised edition. It is available today on Amazon ( and will be officially released to all booksellers on June 15, 2016.

  1. Diane, I know that I am addicted to carbs. I crave them, I ate them to excess and I fight the battle each day with the effects of the addiction. With your help,I have become aware and proactive. I feel hopeful where there has been none before. People have to stop feeding the carbs! That is what we do after we eat a high carb meal, the carbs need more carbs, the cravings are horrific.
