Mothers Who Give Birth to Large Birth Weight Infants are at a Higher Risk for Breast Cancer

Women who have large birth weight infants (9 pounds or more) most likely had gestational diabetes, or glucose intolerance at the least. These women had the genetic predisposition to insulin imbalance BEFORE pregnancy…they just didn’t know it. Most found out they had insulin imbalance and blood sugar issues at the 24th-28th week of their pregnancy. They could have found out they were pre-destined for insulin imbalance much earlier. These are the same women who have a greater chance of developing breast cancer later in their lives.

What to do? The answer might be as simple as routine fasting lab work. When a woman has a yearly physical exam and lab work (the lab work can also be done as part of an Ob/Gyn visit), the following labs would show if she has insulin imbalance:
The following are the labs for a woman with uncontrolled Metabolism B: the precursor to gestational diabetes, pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes…and an increased risk of breast cancer:

  • Fasting glucose over 89mg/dL
  • LDL cholesterol over 99mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol under 45mg/DL
  • Triglycerides over 99mg/dL
  • Hemoglobin A1C over 5.6
  • Vitamin D under 40

If her fasting lab work fits the profile for Metabolism B, she can do something proactively to regulate her insulin, normalize her lab work, and possibly prevent gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer.

In 2009, I released a “state of the science” diet and lifestyle program in “The Metabolism Miracle” (DaCapo Lifelong) In 2012, I released the core Miracle program with information tailored to those with pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes called “The Diabetes Miracle”.

This easy to follow 3 Step program is a low glycemic index, low glycemic load program which also focuses on timing of carbohydrate inclusion in the diet. It begins to work to regulate insulin after only 4 days. Step 1 lasts eight weeks. This lower carb phase will rest the overworking pancreas and liver and cut insulin release almost immediately.

At the end of Step 1′s eight weeks, repeat blood work is usually normalized. Weight loss continues during Step 2 when carbohydrates re-enter intake in a methodical, balanced way. Step 3 is a balanced diet with equal parts of carb, protein, and fat. In the future, if the woman goes off program, takes a vacation from The Metabolism Miracle…she would do a short stay in Step 1 and Step 2 before returning to Step 3. In this way, the pancreas and liver are rested and rehabed….insulin release is normalized, and good health and well being continues.

The program will help women of any age lose weight, lower cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar and decrease the risk of breast cancer.
