This is quite possibly the lamest article I’ve ever read on a solution for the childhood obesity problem. Decreasing childrens’ caloric intake by 64 calories/day will make a difference? (It appears that this #64 is “magical”….I saw a new light beer commercial the other day named “64” …denoting its caloric content. Must be the result of a marketing focus group).
I will share with you what over 15 years of intense research on the issues of obesity, metabolic syndrome, pre diabetes/type 2 diabetes have taught me. I am a medical nutrition specialist with over 30 years experience in these areas, a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and author of several books on this topic. I will assure you, the answer is not in reducing childrens’ caloric intake by 64 calories/day, having kids take gym daily, or researching specific genes so pharmacological band aids can be developed for big pharma profits.
Back in the early ’50’s (60+ years ago), research identified a compilation of medical disorders that are progressive in nature and ultimately lead to increasing levels of cholesterol (turns out to be LDL), triglycerides, blood pressure, midline fat, and blood sugar aberrations. This syndrome was called Syndrome X or Metabolic syndrome. It is genetically mediated.
Untreated Metabolic Syndrome will eventually lead to high cholesterol, hypertension, overweight/obesity, and even type 2 diabetes. A cornucopia of disorders/diseases that could require billions of dollars in pharmaceutical research and development…..IF it was not presented correctly….
The medical community/government made a decision at this very important juncture….as to the type of diet recommendations should be dispensed for prevention/treatment of Syndrome X? Their choice: the low fat/low cholesterol/reduced calorie diet…. This decision changed the course of medical history and pharmaceutical profits.
By promoting the concept that a lower fat, lower cholesterol, lower calorie diet would lower fats like cholesterol, triglycerides, belly fat, blood pressure, and glucose…a very profitable industry was “spun” : The low fat/low cholesterol/fat free/low calorie recommendations that we hear 60 years later.
What has happened as a result of a food pyramid that put fats and meats at the tippy top and made the base lower calorie, lower fat, lower cholesterol choices like grains, fruit, starchy veggies, legumes, low fat or fat free milk or yogurt? We have become the fattest and sickest, most medicated generation in US history.
Why? It turns out that people with the genetic predisposition to heart disease, diabetes, obesity/overweight….have a metabolism that over-releases the fat gain hormone insulin in response to a low fat, low calorie, higher carb diet! So….the majority of people who had metabolic syndrome to begin with, became fatter and sicker on this medically promoted program.
