This is an interesting article that I decided to pass along regarding using a very common food…a fruit….to help prevent or minimize the effects of inflammation of the colon. The skin of the apple contains a polyphenol that actually helps decrease colon inflammation. Don’t peel the apple, eat the apple with its peel for this benefit. For those who have chronic ulcerative colitis, the regular intake of apples may increase their periods of remission or decrease the severity of attacks. Perhaps this polyphenol effect can also help prevent colo-rectal…if it relates to inflamed conditions in the colon.
Can you imagine this? Years ago, our grandmothers told us “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I’m sure most of us thought; here she goes again!!! But many “wives tales” of the past have been shown to hold some water in the present/future.
We have become a nation of “Show me the research” “Show me the proof” “Show me the study.” Well…..here it is! Now, if we listened to our grandmothers for the past 50 years and had that apple a day, every day, we might be in better internal condition. But 50 years later, the study is finally here with our proof!
I feel this way. If a health suggestion causes no harm…such as an apple a day….and perhaps has some benefit…why not try it? People ask me every day what I think about garlic, green tea, turmeric, coffee, dark chocolate. If these foods, herbs, spices cause no harm…and can possibly allow for good….why not try them? By the time we wait for science to test, research, study and prove natural remedies, it might be too late for us to benefit.
Think I’ll grab an apple!
