I’m smiling as I write this blog, but I know that it is very important to those of you who are very anxious to lose those unwanted pounds. Read on…these are the facts:
Traditional Weight Loss: On a traditional weight loss plan that is based upon the “ calories in/calories out” rule, weight loss consists of losses of water weight, muscle weight, and fat weight. Pounds lost are made up of 3 components….(two of which you don’t necessarily want to lose… (muscle and hydration). Weight loss based on calories visually looks like this: A ten pound weight loss that is composed of muscle/water/and fat equates to about 5 inches off the body…..twenty pounds lost = about 10 inches off the body.
The stickler with traditional weight loss diets based upon calories taken in minus calories burned off through exercise is that they only work if that style diet matches your metabolism. People with normal insulin response (those with Met A) gain weight when they over- eat calorically and under-exercise. They lose weight when they cut their caloric intake and increase their energy expenditure. If they notice they have gained 5 pounds, they can cut out dessert and skip the nightly potato chips and can lose the 5 pounds in no time. Their weight matches the formula and their metabolism is in equilibrium. As a result, their weight loss is very regular and uniform. They will lose about 1-2 pounds/week, every week. If they eat less and exercise more, it can be faster.
This is how we were all taught weight loss can occur. This is how all weight loss diets are developed. And this is why over 55% of people who are struggling with weight loss CANNOT lose weight and keep it off.
Metabolism B Weight Loss: Over 55% of people who struggle with weight loss do not have metabolic equilibrium. Because of a hormonal imbalance, their metabolism and weight does not respond to a calories in/calories out formula. They can cut their calories, increase activity, count fat grams, and limit sodium and….contrary to what the diet books says….they WILL NOT lose weight and keep it off.
Why? Because over 100 million people in the US alone have an imbalance of the fat gain hormone insulin. Insulin in excess causes increased fat growth on (around the middle and back and visceral fat between organs) and in (in the bloodstream as LDL cholesterol and triglycerides) the body.
Insulin is normally released in the right amount based on a rise in blood sugar from carb foods or the liver’s release of stored sugar when we pass five hours without eating. A person with Met A always releases the right amount of insulin…A person with Met B begins to over-release insulin in response to carbs and liver release and, despite the number of calories or fat grams or sodium grams ingested, will GAIN fat.
A hormonal imbalance of insulin is inherited and exacerbated by the environment (lack of activity, excess carb portions, skipping meals, stress, illness). You don’t cause Met B, you inherit the gene and “life” speeds the process along.
Because a Met B’s weight does not directly respond to calories in/calories out….the millions upon millions of people with Met B do not respond to calorie based diets and these diets can actually make them “fatter”.
If you took two women (one with Met A and one with Met B)….both are 52 years old, both are 5’5” and weigh 170# at the start of a calorie based diet and checked their weight loss in 8 weeks, the Met A woman would most likely lose 10 pounds (1-2 pounds/week). The Met A woman will lose 10# and 5 inches. The Met B woman could have lost 2 pounds, no pounds, or gained weight! There is no way she will lose anywhere near 10# or 5 inches after 8 weeks on a calorie based program.”
If you gave the Met B woman a program that rests her insulin release, allows fat to burn, helps the connection between insulin and cells (she would be following the Metabolism Miracle), she would lose 6-13# in 8 weeks. But the kicker? Since she is not counting calories but is balancing insulin, she will NOT lose water, muscle, and fat…she will only lose FAT. So….if she loses 10#, and it is all fat, she will lose 10 inches.
The Met A woman following her “diet” lost 10# and 5 “…that’s in the normal range
The Met B woman following her “MM diet also lost 10# and 10 “….that’s her normal range. She looks like she lost twice as much as the Met A woman!
So….Met B’s…be happy. You will finally succeed at weight loss, your weight loss will be all fat loss, you will look like you’ve lost twice as much weight as you have, your cholesterol/triglyceride/blood pressure/blood sugar/energy will improve. This program is not a matter of beating the system and losing more weight than is recommended…it is about balancing your insulin to enable fat burning so you can lose weight and regain health permanently.
